RES Project Nigeria

Promoting innovative solar cooling technologies in new markets

12/2022 - 12/2023

Partners

General Overview

The SelfChill team is conducting webinars, on-site trainings, and communication activities to introduce off-grid solar cooling systems for reducing post-harvest losses in Nigeria, where two SelfChill cold rooms have already been installed.
  • A SelfChill Cold Room was installed as the first SelfChill system in Nigeria in December 2021 at the NSPRI research institute in Ilorin.
It is currently being used for research purposes. The cold room will also be used for training and education as part of the RES project
  • A SelfChill Cold Room 20 for cooling tomatoes was installed in February 2022 at a grocery store in Benin City
  • Another Cold Room 20 is currently being implemented for the refrigeration of agricultural products in Lagos at a market place.
The inauguration will take place in September 2023.

Background

In Nigeria, more than 85% of agricultural land is cultivated by smallholders. Most of them live and work in rural, non-electrified areas.
Post-harvest losses due to lack of cooling are up to 50%. The need for off-grid cooling systems is enormous.
For the Nigerian market, the SelfChill team focuses on solar cold rooms. The standard system configuration of SelfChill is the Cold Room 20.
In the 20m³ SelfChill cold room, 500kg of refrigerated goods (agricultural products such as fruits, vegetables, seeds etc) can be cooled down to 4°C. Due to the solar power supply, the cooling solutions run independently of any infrastructure.

Activities

  • Webinars: The project starts with three webinars in early 2023 on the reduction of post-harvest losses with solar cooling technologies and the system design of solar cooling solutions hosted by NSPRI Ilorin. Please find the information about the webinar on NSPRI-webinars | SelfChill
  • On-site-trainings: On-site-trainings to teach technicians, students and engineers how to design and install solar cooling systems will be operated in Ilorin and Lagos in 2023

  • Communication and awareness creation: Activities for communication and awareness creation such as media cooperation, networking at public events and conferences for the professional audience will be organized

The RES Project Nigeria is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action as part of the Renewable Energy Solutions Programme of the German Energy Solutions Initiative

German Energy Agency (dena)
The German Energy Agency (dena) is a centre of excellence for the applied energy transition and climate protection. dena studies the challenges of building a climate-neutral society and supports the German government in achieving its energy and climate policy objectives. Since its founding in 2000, dena has worked to develop and implement solutions and bring together national and international partners from politics, industry, the scientific community and all parts of society. dena is a project enterprise and a public company owned by the German federal government. dena’s shareholders are the Federal Republic of Germany and the KfW Group. www.dena.de/en

German Energy Solutions Initiative
With the aim of positioning German technologies and know-how worldwide, the German Energy Solutions Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK) supports suppliers of climate-friendly energy solutions in opening up foreign markets. The focus lies on renewable energies, energy efficiency, smart grids and storage, as well as technologies such as power-to-gas and fuel cells. Aimed in particular at small and medium-sized enterprises, the German Energy Solutions Initiative supports participants through measures to prepare market entry as well as to prospect, develop and secure new markets. www.german-energy-solutions.de/en

Renewable Energy Solutions Programme (RES Programme)
With the RES programme, the Energy Export Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action (BMWK) helps German companies in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sectors enter new markets. Within the framework of the programme, reference plants are installed and marketed with the support of the German Energy Agency (dena). Information and training activities help ensure a sustainable market entry and demonstrate the quality of climate-friendly technologies made in Germany. www.german-energy-solutions.de/res-programm.html
